# Off campus emergency department and independent free standing emergency center's are the types of free standing emergency department .

Off campus emergency department - are the more common type of free standing emergency department . It is run by hospitals and are considered similar to hospital outpatient department . These must be licensed by state and adherent to Medicare conditions of participation and it should be financially and clinically integrated with the affiliated hospitals ,located within 35mile radius and should provide 24 ×7 services .

Independent free standing emergency department is owned and operated by non - hospital for gaining profit . They are similar to off campus emergency department in terms of service . They are not recognised by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services and also they are not bound by federal emergency department regulations and do not have to comply with EMTALA.

# The advantages of off campus emergency department is that it is affiliated , licensed and adherent to Center for Medicare and Medicaid services. They are bound to federal emergency department regulations and comply with EMTALA and provide 24×7 services on outpatient basis .

# The services provided is reimbursed either by private insurance or Medicare/Medicaid once after treatment and all services are completed . Then all the bills and services are checked and after approval reimbursement is done .

# Advantages of FSEDs are :-

- they provide 24×7 services

- provide services at out patient basis

- they are approved and affiliated by Center for Medicare and Medicaid

- comply with EMTALA .

Disadvantages of FSED are:-

- some of the FSED are run for profit

- the second type of FSED are not affiliated and licensed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid.

# The members of the community would favour an OCED because of its advantages as compared with IFEC.
