The areas that can be visually inspected on a patient during the introduction period and before we begin our formal physical assessment include;

Visual Inspection; the first step of the examination. Many abnormalities can be detected by inspecting the thorax merely as the patient is breathing.

Palpation, the first step of the assessment, where we touch the patient. Many breathing difficulties can be spotted during this step. Some systemic problems may be detected during this phase of the exam as well as just mechanical breathing problems.

Percussing, usually helpful in a limited capacity

Auscultation; the process of listening to the breath sounds using a stethoscope.
