Question

5. A type of pump used in reactors at a chemical processing plant operates under severe conditions and experiences frequent failures. A particular site uses five reactors which, on delivery, were fitted with new pumps. There is one pump per reactor: When a pump fails, it is returned to the manufacturer in exchange for a reconditioned unit. The replacement pumps are claimed to be good as new. The reactors have been operating concurrently for 2750 h since the plant was commissioned, with the following pump failure history Reactor 1 - at 932, 1374 and 1997 h. Reactor 2-at 1566, 2122 and 2456h. Reactor 3 - at 1781 h Reactor 4 - at 1309, 1652, 2337 and 2595 h. Reactor 5-at 1270 and 1928 h. a Calculate the Laplace statistic (Eq. 2.46) describing the behaviour of the total population of pumps as a point process. Estimate Weibull parameters for both new and reconditioned pumps. b manu facturen light of vour answers to (a) and (b), comment on the claim made by the pump

Answer

From the available information, the reactor has been operating 2750 h since the plant was commissioned a) The Laplace statistics describing the behaviour of total population of pumps is described by, Mean 23319 13 -1793.7692 -1794 (Round to nearest number) 2b 23153 Since,b -5) 2x5 -r-1794 0.1 eb) The Weibull parameters is used because of ability to assume parameter characteristic of many different types of distributions Weibull parameters mean λ= 1794 and k= 5 exp 1794 1794 1794 0.00281-X 1794 1794 c) From the failure frequent of reaction, we get the assumption of less and 5 reactors placed are approximated using weibull parameter. Thus, it gives characteristics of probability commissioned to like, thus it shows like of replacement pumps approximately by 2750 h since the point was commissioned
