Patient Introduction
Skyler Hansen is an 18-year-old male diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 6 months ago. He was brought to the Emergency Department by his friends. The friends report that he started acting “weird” while they were playing basketball. He has not eaten anything for 5 hours. Skyler told them that he felt lightheaded and was going to lie down on the cement. They became nervous and decided to bring him in to the Emergency Department. The patient is drowsy, wakes with stimulus, has slurred speech, is diaphoretic, and is acting irrationally.

Case scenario

1) priority assessment- light-headedness,drowsy, wakes with stimulus, has slurred speech, is diaphoretic, and is acting irrationally.

  • Assess causative or contributing factors by identifying the factors present.
  • Assess the degree of impairment.
  • Check the current blood glucose.
  • Administration of 50%dextrose and glucagon to increase blood sugar
  • Repeat the patient’s blood glucose level after 1 hour.
  • Monitors patient’s vital signs.
  • Draw blood for baseline electrolytes.
  • Obtain a complete patient history including the last alcohol intake and medications.

It includes accidents, injuries, coma, and may even prove fatal. Recent studies have associated severe hypoglycemia as a risk factor for dementia, falls, fractures, and heart attacks. The simplest solution under hypoglycemia conditions is to provide a sugar source to the patient.
