  • Stage 1Latent conflict : In this no conflict but the potential for conflict exist. It mainly due to interdependence, differences in goals and priorities, bureaucratic factor, incompatible performance criteria and competition for scarce resources. Example : Line of authority sometimes clash with staff function because some senior nurses put their own interest to the staff nurse and her function which causes conflict.
  • Stage 2 Perceived conflict :During this stage group identify the conflict, its sources. Here the both staff nurse and senior staff nurse identify the conflict as it arises due to bureaucratic nature of senior staff.
  • Stage 2Felt conflict : Here the groups respond emotionally each other. Anger, frustration, hostility expressed each other. It causes huge conflict even its small problem. Thus organizational effectiveness decline.
  • Stage4:Manifest conflict :Both parties fighting each other with open and passive aggression. Here the nurse manger identify the conflict between staff nurse and senior staff and sove their problem.
  • Stage 5Conflict after math :If conflict resolved two way. If it resolved before manifest stage, conflict will result positive after math otherwise dispute will occur.
  • Best strategies to deal with conflict are the following : AVID approach
    • Assume positive about others.
    • Validate the situation as cannot assume the positive. It can be achieved by directly talk to the patient.
    • Ignore the situation if unable to assume positive or validate the situation.
    • Do something if cannot ignore it. It can be achieved by debriefing the situation with trust friend and get advice, doing relaxation techniques like walking, yoga, meditation etc.
    • Be proactive instead of reactive
    • Be slow to anger. Improve communication skills
    • Collaboration is one of the method in which every one involved in the conflict must be participated actively. Here collaborating manager he possess skills such as active listening, identify the concern and analyse the situation. This method can reduce the conflict however it required high assertiveness and cooperation.  
  • AVID approach is best method to reduce conflict. In this approach we can think positively to the person and it cannot occur directly talk to him. Sometimes it may resolve the conflict. Otherwise we may choose validate the situation and ignore the situation. It is best incase of individual level of conflict. At organizational level collaboration model is the best.

Conflict is arising due to disagreement between two or more individual in an organization. Conflict can be managed at individual level by good communication, assertiveness, collaboration etc.
