A client had surgery today for colon cancer. She was transferred to her room two hours ago. In report you discover that she had a sigmoid colostomy with bag in place, a clean dry surgical dressing, an N/G tube to low continuous wall suction draining dark brown drainage, a right central line with D5/NS running at 125 mL/hr. IV morphine administered per PCA is connected to the central line and is set to deliver 0.05 mg every 6 minutes on demand. When you enter the room, the client is awake and tearful, tense, and anxious. She tells you that the pain is unbearable, asks why didn’t they just let her die, and states she has pushed that stupid button a million times and it isn’t helping.
