Five (5) Topics: Reactions with Loss and Death Discussion Topic #1: Death Experience that Really affected You The outcome of this discussion is to talk about a death experience that really affected you. Remembering and telling a story about death may be upsetting, but it may also be freeing for you. Our experiences with loss and death leave us with messages, feelings, fears and attitudes we will carry throughout life. To prevent our being controlled by our unconscious and conscious reactions to past experiences, it is important to recognize and state explicitly how these experiences have influenced us and our lifestyles. 1. Think about a death-related experience that really affected you: o When did it occur? o Where was it? o Who was involved? o What happened? 2. What were your reactions, positive and negative? 3. What were you advised to do, and what did you do, to cope with the experience? 4. What did you learn about death and loss as a result of this experience? 5. Of the things learned then, what makes you feel fearful or anxious now? 6. Of the things learned then, what makes it easier for you to cope with death now?

1.a) It occurred while i was posted in ICU .

b) In the hospital

c) It was my own patient ,a 26 year old boy who expired due to hemorrhage due to bike accident

d) It made me realise that how important is life . How we should be careful while driving and in any other activity . Since, he was so young and had a long life ahead , suddenly due to the mistake of overspeeding he lost his life .

2. I had negative reactions . I was not able to make the relatives understand ,does not know what to say .

3. This made me realise that i need to be more strong . Should be empathetic rather than sympathetic to cope up with such situations .

4. I learned that life is only one ,you need to live it fully . Anyone who has born will die one day when the time comes . We should not cry for the loss ,rather we should understand that the time for them is this much only . Be practical in life .
