Several cowboys are involved in an altercation that leads to a gunfight. Three men are wounded.

Two of these men experience a sudden and dramatic onset of inflammation with the appearance of brownish red discoloration, the formation of blisters with brown to red foul-smelling fluid and extremely painful tissue swelling around the gunshot wound.

Gas is present in the affected tissues and the margins of the affected area expand so rapidly that changes are visible over a matter of minutes.

Systemic symptoms develop early in the process and consist of sweating, fever, anxiety and increased heart rate.

Both cowboys develop a shock-like syndrome with decreased blood pressure, renal failure, coma and death.
