A 2.1 meter long baseball bat travels in a direction that is parallel to its length. An observer at rest on the Earth measures the bat's length to be 1.5 meters. What is the speed of the baseball bat relative to the stationary observer (give your answer in terms of “c”) ?

Answer #1

this is a question of length contraction

L = Lo*sqrt(1 - (v/c)^2)

1.5 = 2.1 * sqrt(1 - (v/c)^2)

v = 0.49c

so the speed of the baseball bat is 0.49c
