Question

PROBLEM 1 (10 POINTS) A uniform rope of weight W hangs between two trees. The ends of the rope are at the same height, and they each make angle 0 with the trees. Find a) the tension at either end of the rope b) The tension in the middle of the rope.
PROBLEM 2 (10 POINTS) A particle of mass m moving along a straight line is acted on by a retarding force (one always directed against the motion) F-bea, where b and a are constants and v is the velocity, At に0, it is moving with velocity vo. Find the velocity at later times

Answer #1

Solution 1)

a) Let tension in the rope be T

Applying force balance along vertical direction, we have

2Tsinθ=W

So, T=W/2sinθ (Ans)

=========

b) In the middle of the rope, the horizontal forces cancel out and vertical component becomes zero.

Weight is negligible for that small segment , hence, tension also becomes Zero.

=========

Good luck!:)
