Molar mass of trans-stilbene = 180.24 g/mol

Moles of trans-stilbene = (0.4 g)/(180.24 g/mol)

= 0.00222 mol

Molar mass of pyridium tribromide = 319.82 g/mol

Moles of pyridium tribromide = (0.8 g)/(319.82 g/mol) = 0.00250 mol

Reaction indicated shows that equal moles of stilbene and pyridium tribromide.

0.00222 mol of trans-stilbene requires 0.00222 mol of pyridium tribromide.

So, pyridium tribromide is in excess.

Hence, trans-stilbene is limiting reagent.

It is so because trans-stilbene is less than required amount to react completely with pyridium tribromide.
