Financial managers or financial analysts use financial ratios to analysis the company’s financial strength and weakness.   They compare it on the different parameters and compare across the companies within same industry or with the industry average to get a clear picture of the financial health of the company. Comparing with industry average gives a reference point where they compare profitability, liquidity, financial structure, leverage and interest coverage etc.

The Industry analysis is known as cross-sectional analysis and it compares the ratios of the companies of same industry and with its industry average. While performing cross-sectional ratio analysis, the financial analyst tries to find out all kinds of deviations from the standard either it is above the standard or it is below the standard. If the deviation is significant then the financial manager or analyst gets into detail to know the actual reason of deviation.
