What creates a shadow zone? What are the ranges of the shadow zones for S-waves and P-waves?
The shadow zone is the region of the earth from angular distances of 104 to 140 degrees from a given earthquake that doesn't get any direct P waves. The shadow zone results from S waves being halted totally by the liquid center and P waves being bowed (refracted) by the liquid center.

So, shadow zone for S-wave is -103o to 103o
and shadow zone for P-wave is -103o to -142o & 103o to 142o

Suppose that p- and s-waves traveled in straight lines through the Earth (in fact, they don't, but we will make this approximation for this problem). Also suppose that the angular distance from the epicenter (location of the earthquake) on the Earth's spherical surface to the location on the surface beyond which no s-waves can be observed from an earthquake (the angle between the earthquake epicenter and the s shadow zone) is 120 degrees (i.e., the two points are located 1/3...
A wave generator creates water waves with a wavelength of 20 cm in a scaled-down model of a coastline. If the speed of these water waves is 0.59 m/s, what is the frequency of the water waves?

An AC antenna creates radio waves having a wavelength equal to 2.50 m. To test the signal strength, a small detector is placed immediately next to the antenna. (a) What is the frequency of the antenna's AC source? (b) If the detector is circular with radius equal to 5 cm and measures a total energy of 120 J in 10 s, what is the peak electric field of the radio waves? Prove that the image you see of yourself in...
3. Earthquake warning system A typical earthquake produces two types of seismic waves. P ("primary" seismic waves are longitudinal waves that move through the earth's upper crust with speed anywhere from 3 km/s to 5 km/s (the exact speed depends on the local composition of the earth's crust). S ("secondary") waves are transverse waves that move slower than P waves. The S-wave speed is typically about 60% less than the P-wave speed in any given material. The map below shows...
Meteor Infrasound A meteor that explodes n the atmosphere creates infrasound waves that can travel multiple times around the globe. One such meteor produced infrasound waves with a wavelength of 6.6 km that propagated 8830 km in 8.68 h What was the frequency of these waves? Express your answer to three significant figures and include appropriate units.
A stationary storm system in the mid-Atlantic creates long ocean waves whose wavelength is 64.4 m. It takes the waves 3.90 days to travel from the storm to Miami, Florida (U.S.). These waves pass under a bird that is floating in the ocean. Starting from a trough, 3.21 s pass before the bird is next on a crest. How far is the storm from Miami? You are standing 3.08 m from a loudspeaker and you detect an intensity level of...
Source one creates a wave with amplitude A and intensity I0 at point P. Source two creates a wave that has amplitude 2A at point P. Waves one and two maximally constructively interfere at point P. The intensity at point P is IP. What is the ratio of IP/I0 when waves one and two are maximally constructively interfering at point P?
1. What is the auxin concentration in subsets of c and d of the elongation zone if the rate of elongation in roots is 40% of maximal when there is no directional stimulus? 2. What is the auxin concentration in region a given the conditions listed to the left of the figure? (70% elongation of either a or b, but you decide which) 3.The % elongation of either elongation zone represented by a or by b is 70%. What is...
