Finger stick glucose monitoring has aided diabetes management, principally by enabling patients- particularly those treated with insulin - to become full partners along with health professionals in striving for excellent glycemic control.

COGNITIVE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Cognitive objectives are designed to increase an individual's knowledge.

Bloom describes certain categories starting with basic factual knowledge, and it progress through comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

  • Knowledge - remembering or recalling information.
  • Comprehension - The ability to obtain meaning from information
  • Application - The ability to use information
  • Analysis - The ability to break information into parts to understand it better.
  • Synthesis - The ability to put materials together to create something new.
  • Evaluation - The ability to check, judge, and critique materials.

Examples : The patient will be able to acquire knowledge regarding the importance of fingerstick monitoring in glycemic control and able to apply this knowledge and evaluate this in their daily lives.

PSYCHOMOTOR LEARNING OBJECTIVE

This one focuses on motor skills and actions that require physical coordination

  • Imitation - learner imitates an action after a visual demonstration
  • Manipulation - performance of an action with a written or verbal instructions
  • Precision
  • Articulation - display of coordination of a series of related acts
  • Naturalization- high level of proficiency

Example : patients assess the significance and importance of finger stick glucose monitoring

AFFECTIVE LEARNING OBJECTIVE

This domain includes objectives relating to interest, attitudes and values relating to learning the information.

  • Receiving - listening and being attentive
  • Responding - active participation
  • Valuing - value attached to a subject
  • Organization - beginning to build consistent value system
  • Characterization - value system controls behavior
