The Model for Improvement (MFI) is the most commonly used QI approach in health care.
The MFI uses a rapid cycle process called Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles to test the effects of small changes, make them, and ultimately spread the effective changes through the practice or organization.
The MFI begins by asking three simple questions:
- Quality improvement teams then introduce and test changes designed to achieve the improvement aims using successive PDSA cycles until they arrive on a change they believe will produce the desired results and is ready for implementation and spread.
