Health Information management (HIM) uses various terms which may seem to have same meaning but have significant difference. For example, EMR are Electronic Medical records are digital version of the chart used by the healthcare provider at clinical setting. While EHR are Electronic health records which include all the information included in the EMR but it goes beyond and includes the data related to total health of the patient. HIE stands for Health Information Exchange and it is the system of transmitting patient-related data in the hospital system, community or region. So, the terms in HIM may seem similar but hold different meanings and must not be used interchnageably.
