A person or entity that performs certain functions or activities that involve the use or disclosure of protected health information for a covered entity is called a business associate.

Examples:

1. An attorney whose legal services to a health plan involve access to protected health information.

5. WHAT IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF PRIVACY RULE?

The minimum federal standards for protecting the privacy of individually identifiable health information is maintained by the privacy rule. The rule confers certain rights on individuals, like right to access their health information and why their information has been shared with others. The privacy rule also sets up certain conditions under which the covered entities can utilize the protected information for research purpose.
