Question
report 13 C NMR, DEPT, observed bp. Evidence should be given that shows the reaction yeilded an ester product. Specific evidenceshould be given to support the identification of the product ester and starting alcohol.
find the starting alcohol and state product ester
Compare the IR spectrum to the IR spectrum of the starting material. Assign all the major peaks above the fingerprint region in your IR spectra. Assign the signals in the carbon and Dept NMR spectra.
what evidence do yiu have that your experiment did or did not give the expected product?

prepare an ester from acetic acid and a C-4 or C-5 alcohol. To determine the alcohol, you will obtain and interpret the 13C NMR spectra of the data.
the alcohols can be:
1-butanol, 2- butanol, 2- methyl-1- propanol, 3-methyl-1- butanol, 1- penatnol, 2 -pentanol, 3-pentanol, cyclopentanol

Answer #1

1) In the IR spectrum broad peak 3300 -2500 of acid will disapper and new peak of ester will appear at 1750-1735.

2) 13C spectrum will give all the peaks corresponding to structure of ester. which will be confirmed by DEPT experiment.

1151 VCL 11-8: Claisen Condensation -1 For this assignment, the target compound that you should synthesize is methyl acetoacetate. This is another carbonyl addition variation. Examine the product and determine which ester is the nucleophile and which is the electrophile. Keep in mind the mechanism and that you need to acidify the intermediate in order to isolate a neutral product. Synthesis Procedures 1. (a) From the spectral data ( H, C NMR, IR, MS) you were given, identify the structure of your product. Explain why you chose your particular product based on the spectroscopic data. (b) Fully assign the 1H NMR spectrum of your product (i.e. determine which peaks in the 1H NMR correspond to which hydrogens in the product). You will not receive full marks for determination of the unknown unless you assign the 1H NMR spectrum completely. (c) Now work backwards...

Experiment Write Up Proposal You will write up a synthesis procedure for one reaction that could be potentially run in a face- to-face Chem 2321 lab session. Your proposal will include an introduction and procedure. The procedure will include step-by-step instructions for running the reaction (including reaction monitoring), work-up. (product isolation and purification), and analysis (characterization). You will need to include sample calculations for percent yield and provide sample spectra analysis. You must upload your proposal as a single document...
