Na+=0.47 M, Mg2+=0.053 M, Ca2+=0.010 M
magnesium is isolated from seawater by adding a strong base that cause the magnesium ions to precipitate. determine the minimum final hydroxide concentration that is needed to precipitate 99.9% of the magnesium ions from a sample of sea water at 25 C
will any sodium ions ppt from seawater at the hydroxide ion concentration?
will any calcium ions ppt from the seawater at hydroxide ion concentration ?

Answer #1

Mg(OH)2 Ksp = 5.61 x 10^ -12 M

99.9 % Mg2+ of 0.053 = ( 99.9/100) x 0.053 = 0.052947 , [Mg2+] left free = 0.053-0.052947 = 0.000053 M

now Ksp = [Mg2+] [OH-]^2

5.61x 10^ -12 = 0.000053 [OH-]^2

[OH-] = 1.06 x 10^ -7 M

Thus minimum hydroxide needed = 1.06 x 10^ -7 M

No sodium ions will get precipitated

No Calcium ions will get precipitated
