Spina Bifida is the failure of the neural tube to develop during embryonic development causing defects in the spinal cord and in the bones of the spine. There are different types of spina bifida, spina bifida occulta is the most common and is a defect in the closure without the herniation and exposure of the spinal cord. Spina bifida cystica is a defect in the closure of a herniated protrusion, spinal fluid and some part of the spinal cord and nerves at the surface of the skin in the lumbosacral or sacral area.
There are various nursing care plans for Spina Bifida, one of those is Hypothermia which indicates the body temperature is below the normal range which causes illness condition. Disturbance in urinary elimination, which is Neuromuscular defect. Change in normal bowel habits characterized by involuntary passage of stool. Which is Neuromuscular involvement. Hydrocephalus is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricular system resulting in the enlargement of the intracranial cavity. This occurs an irregularity in the production and absorption of the fluid which causes an increase in intracranial pressure as the fluid builds up.
Hydrocephalus can be classified as communicating and non communicating. Communicating occurs when there is an impaired resorption of cerebrospinal fluid, non communicating hydrocephalus is caused by an obstruction within the ventricular system
The nursing goals for a client with hydrocephalus include improving cerebral tissue perfusion, reducing anxiety, preventing injury, and the absence of complications. There are various nursing care plans for Hydrocephalus like Ineffective Cerebral Tissue Perfusion which decreases in the oxygen resulting in the failure to nourish the tissues at the capillary level. This relates to decrease in venous or arterial blood flow and Increase intracranial pressure. Anxiety creates vague uneasy feeling of discomfort accompanied by an autonomic response. This relates to threat to or change in environment or change in health status. There is a risk for injury as a result of environmental conditions interacting with the individual’s adaptive and defensive resources, which may compromise health. These effects to shunt placement and potential complications of shunt functioning. At increased risk for being invaded by pathogenic organisms.
There are several treatments that can be used to manage symptoms or conditions associated with spina bifida such as surgery to close the opening in the spine which may be done preferably during infancy, but can also be done in later stages, physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy, use of assistive devices and mobility equipment, such as a wheelchair, or walking aids, and urinary and bowel management.
Nursing care planning goals for clients with spina bifida include prevent infection, maintain skin integrity, prevent trauma related to disuse, increase family coping skills, education about the condition, and support.
