Identify at least three (3) examples of different types of data mapping.

Prepare a short briefing paper that includes, for each example, a summary of the source and target systems that were mapped, why the mapping was done, what type of mapping was performed, problems and issues encountered with the mapping process, and a synthesis of what you believe lies ahead for future data mapping in health care.

Data mapping involves establishing relationships or matching between two separate data models, a source and a target. This matching or mapping can be between two databases that have the same data elements, but are referred by different names. This allows software and systems to exchange all kinds of patient information and data including outcomes reporting, reimbursement claims, etc. Data mapping will remain an integral part of US healthcare and electronic health records. Mapping has a key role in moving data among different settings with different uses, from patient care information to national policy-decision based information.

A data map design begins with the identification of the source and the target. Versions of both the source and target needs be tracked, and there should be a mechanism to show the version history. Data mapping matches from a source to a target so that the two may exchange data meaningfully. Common sources and targets include databases, data sets, standards, and terminologies.

Types of data mapping:

Data mapping can be unidirectional or bidirectional. Unidirectional mapping goes from the source to the target. Bidirectional maps go in both directions; from source to target and target to source. All maps can’t be bidirectional; for example when multiple and different terms in the source map to a single term in the target. In some maps, a database acts as a translation key from one source to the next, providing the extra information required to map.
