Create Thread FORUM DESCRIPTION DISCUSSION BOARD #4 Athletes and Nutrition Recently I taught a Human Biology course at Bentley University. Two of my students, Jeff and Chris, were friends and active weight lifters. They were also quite health conscious-Chris worked part time at a Health Food Store. Because they were business majors they were not very knowledgeable about biology and nutrition. Both were quite lean and wanted to bulk up on muscle, so Jeff found on the internet this quick way to bulk up in half the usual time. Fora few hundred dollars he would receive in the mail numerous steroids, hormones and vitamins along with an extremely regimented diet and exercise schedule. The company claim that it works, and you can really bulk up very quickly in two weeks, though there is no scientific proof, just a lot of satisfie customers Jeff asked me what I thought of this hormonal / vitamin plan What would you advise Jeff to do? Moreover, what are your opinions about athletes (both college and professional) using these dietary supplements? We will all watched the recent Olvmnics and there are numernus verv.comnetitive athletes

Professional athletes are exposed to everyday intensive physical strain. In order to provide for the energy demands , the athletes consume various food supplements that could be classified in two different large groups: ingredients banned by WADA and ingredients permitted for use .

Professional athletes are fully informed about the benefits provided by the intake of food supplements but are not well aware of the health risk hidden in some formulations and accepted them as safe products. Using safe supplements upto a limit is permitted but using too much or overdose of it should be banned as it causes several serious health adverse effects might not be present at the present scenario but develop after a few time . To improve their performances using shortcuts is not ethical that is use of steroids supplements rather its better to work on it and improve the performances because steroids have drastic effects on health .
