A patient’s estranged husband arrives at the clinic demanding to speak with the physician. He is verbally abusive to the front desk personnel. The medical assistant, Kari, comes up to see who is causing the commotion and see if she can help. The patient’s husband sees Kari and demands to know why his wife was at the clinic. Kari explains that she is unable to share any information with him. The husband is now yelling and is banging his hand on the counter. His anger is escalating. How can you calm this person down? What should be done at this point? Is there a protocol that should be followed?

Answer #1

Understand his problem and listen the problem patiently.you should keep your self calm .make him undestand that why he is unable to explain about his wifes condition.tell him that he is the care taker he is not allowed by the organisation to explain patients condition to relatives.you can arrange a meeting with his wifes doctor so that everythink will be cleared to him.If doctor is not available you can inform to the incharge nurse or administrative department to handle the situation.if you too get angry it can make legal problems as it is agai st medical ethics.
