Discuss the mechanism and conditions under which it would be likely that a fish species be hunted to extinction in an open harvest fishery in economics.  Detail at least one policy that could be enacted by government to prevent this from occurring.

Fish could be hunted for extinction if illegal smuggling and excessive hypercompetition is promoted through state deregulation which would promote excess extraction or fishing and ultimately cause higher probability of extinction.

Government thus can intervene by adopting fishing limits, regulations on maximum fishing and higher levies and penalties for non compliance as well as imposing heavy duty taxes on fishing beyond limits.
