we have mass of each elements as:

C: 49.3 g

H: 6.9 g

O: 43.8 g

Divide by molar mass to get number of moles of each:

C: 49.3/12.01 = 4.1049

H: 6.9/1.008 = 6.8452

O: 43.8/16.0 = 2.7375

Divide by smallest:

C: 4.1049/2.7375 = 1.5

H: 6.8452/2.7375 = 2.5

O: 2.7375/2.7375 = 1

Multiply by 2 to get simplest whole number ratio:

C: 1.5*2 = 3

H: 2.5*2 = 5

O: 1*2 = 2

So empirical formula is:C3H5O2

Answer: C3H5O2

b)

Molar mass of C3H5O2,

MM = 3*MM(C) + 5*MM(H) + 2*MM(O)

= 3*12.01 + 5*1.008 + 2*16.0

= 73.07 g/mol

Now we have:

Molar mass = 146.0 g/mol

Empirical formula mass = 73.07 g/mol

Multiplying factor = molar mass / empirical formula mass

= 146.0/73.07

= 2

So molecular formula is:C6H10O4
