Answer #1

Ulcerative colitis( UC)

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease that involves the colonic mucosa resulting in friability, ulcerations and bleeding.

Risk factors that preceded carol's development of UC

1. Smoking : ulcerative colitis usually occurs in former smokers. Carol was a smoker previously, it might have triggered her immune system wrongly.

2. Age: younger people and people above 60 are susceptible to UC.

3. Antibiotics:use of antibiotics for a longer period of time may cause gastrointestinal mal functions.

4. Bacterial infection : sometime along with the genetic predisposition to UC , bacterial infection also may cause colitis such as Clostridium difficile. ( Carol's treatment includes antibiotics)

Other than these causes and risk factors genetic or family history of Ulcerative colitis, malfunction of immune response( bod's immune system may misidentify the commensal bacterias of intestine as antigens and trigger immune response) and alterations in micobiota of large intestine may contribute to Carol's infection. Stress might be a triggering factor to increase the Ulcerative colitis.
