The Philae Lander, with a mass of 100 kg, is near to the comet 67P, and has exactly the same velocity. It then fires rockets which supply a force of 20 N for 5.0 s directly away from the comet. (i) What acceleration does it have for this time? (ii) What is the final velocity relative to the comet at the end of 5.0 s.

Answer #1

mass=100 kg

ii. Since the area of accelaration time graph will be = 20*10/100= 1

the change in velocity is 1 m/s

so since earlier they have same speed the relative velocity at end must be 1 m/s

i. accelaration with time is 0.20 m/s2 since a=f/m

    On November 12, 2014, the Philae lander separated from the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft, and made a lancing (after bouncing twice) on a comet known as 67P/Chunyumov -Gerasimenko. In this problem, we will explore the Gravitational environment that Rosetta (orbiting the comet) and Philae (on the comet's surface) experienced. On September 30, 2016, Rosetta crashed (as planned) on the comet. We will use a very simple model of the comet, modeling it as a perfect sphere. This is not...

    For the purposes of this problem, use the following data: mass of Comet 67P is 1 times 10^13 kg; radius of Comet 67P is 2.30 km; mass of Philae = 100 kg; mass of Rosetta = 1000 kg; radius of Rosetta's orbit was 22.3 km (a) What is the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the comet, where Philae is? m/s^2 (b) What is the escape speed at the surface of the comet? This is the speed above...

    1) An archer fires an arrow from a bow. The arrow’s mass is 0.088 kg, and an average force of 110 N is exerted by the bowstring over a 0.78 m distance. Calculate the velocity of the arrow just after it is released by the bowstring by two methods: a) Calculate the arrow’s acceleration that is caused by the bowstring, and use kinematic equations to calculate the velocity at the end of the acceleration. Assume a constant acceleration that corresponds...

    A rocket traveling 1950 m/s away from the Earth at an altitude of 6400 km fires its rockets, which eject gas at a speed of 1300 m/s (relative to the rocket). If the mass of the rocket at this moment is 2.65×104 kg and an acceleration of 1.6 m/s2 is desired, at what rate must the gases be ejected? The answer is not 132.19 it is coming up wrong.
