Can pipes that carry bitumen (oil) that undergo corrosion be extremely harmful to the environment? How can we stop or decrease the corrosion of pipes?

yes it is too harmful to the environment.due to the following reason 1.after corrosion the strength of pipes decrease. some time it is responsible for Pipeline spills and leaks [can pollute waterways exposing fish to toxic chemicals that can kill on impact or cause disease over the long-term.
