Answer #1

Part C :

Given, the gasoline engine takes in 1.72 x 104 Joule of heat and delivers 4000 J of work per cycle. And the heat of combustion of gasoline is 4.00 x 104 J/g .

i.e. engine needs 1.72 x 104 J of energy in one cycle. And

1 g of gasoline produces 4.00 x 104 J of energy .

So, For 1.72 x 104 J of energy we need

  od 1.72 × 104 4.00 x 10 = 0.43 g of gasoline (in one cycle) .

Part D :

The engine produces 4000 J of energy in one cycle .

So, in 70 cycles it will produce 4000 x 70 = 280000 J of energy.

According to the question, the engine goes through 70.0 cycles per second.

i.e. engine is producing 280000 J of energy per second .

Hence, the power of the engine is 280000 J/s or 280000 W or 280 kW (kilowatts) .

Part E :

We know that

1 kilowatt = 1.341 horsepower

So, 280 kilowatt = 280 x 1.341 = 375.486 horsepower

Hence, the power output of engine is 375.46 horsepower .

For any doubt please comment and please give an up vote. Thank you.
