Answer #1
Idle or passive degree of freedom is one which is unconstrained but which does not affect the transmission of motion in a mechanism.

Passive or idle, freedom are true degree of freedom which are properly detected by the kutzback-gribler mobility criterion.

It can take place in any position of the linkage without affecting the values of the input and output relationship of the linkage.

It can be identified by inspection. However they should not be counted as degree of freedom when attempting to solve a constraint loop.

In a general constraint system, apassive degree of freedom is one forwhich the value of constraint that would fix that degree offreedomdoes not affect any other geon in the constraint system.
