For this concept map, you will be choosing an abnormal finding for respiratory System from chapter 18 in your Jarvis text.

Subtopics should include:

  • Locate—list common assessment findings or observations associated with the abnormal finding
  • Communicate—list questions you would ask the patient related to the abnormal finding
  • Medicate—list expected treatments for the abnormal finding
  • Educate—list pertinent patient education items related to the abnormal finding and/or its prevention
  • Advocate—list items you would request from the physician or advocate for concerning the abnormal finding

You are not limited to these subtopics, but these subtopics must all be included.

Each subtopic should include at least 3-4 supporting characteristics for that subtopic.

Example of abnormal finding for respiratory system - tracheo-esophageal fistula . It is also known as TEF . It is an abnormal connection between the esophagus and trachea . It is of five types :-

- No fistula , esophageal atresia

- proximal fistula between esophagus and trachea

- distal fistula between esophagus and trachea

- upper esophagus and lower esophagus atresia

- H- type tracheoesphageal fistula

# Locate - the person with TEF has three main signs to locate that are 3C's - coughing, cyanosis and choking , drooling of secretions from mouth and nose , shortness of breath , abdominal distension.

# Communicate - The questions to be asked are :-

- is there continuous drooling of the secretions from mouth and sometimes from nose .

- ask about the presence of 3C's

- was there any difficulty in the pregnancy period

- did any teratogenic drugs were taken during pregnancy

- is there shortness of breath

- is there any history.of surgery

- how food is eaten etc

# Medicate - interventions are :-

- frequently suction to avoid aspiration of secretions and choking

- surgery as soon as possible

- provision of anti secretary drugs to reduce secretions

- elevate head end to 30° .

# education - provision of health education on the same problem , the most important one is to prevent aspiration by continuous suctioning out the secretions , administration of oxygen if needed.

# advocate - acting as a advocate , in this case it ishapplicable when the date for surgery is getting postponed due to various reasons because it will directly affect the state of
