The total return indices are used to measure the performance of a group of components by assuming that all cash distributions are reinvested, tracking the components' price movements and bonds and commodities, dividends, interest, rights offerings and other distributions realized over a given period of time.

A price index only considers price movements (capital gains or losses) of the securities that make up the index. Both the price index and Total Return index are used to computing stock turns of many stock indexes.
