Count ratio is obtained by dividing the number of Mg atoms in one formula unit of MgO with number of oxygen atoms.

Count ratio = number of Mg atoms in one formula unit of MgO number of O atoms in one formula unit of MgO

Count ratio =

Count ratio=1:1

This ratio is different from relative mass ratio of magnesium to oxygen due to difference in atomic masses of magnesium and oxygen

The atomic masses of magnesium and oxygen are 24.3 g/mol and 16 g/mol respectively.

The relative mass ratio of magnesium to oxygen in the formula MgO is

Mass of one mole of Mg atoms in one formula unit of MgO Mass of one mole of O atoms in one formula unit of MgO 24.3 16
