Answer #1

Redox reactions of magnesium:

  1. With oxygen

    2Mg(s) + O2(g) -> 2MgO(s)

  2. With nitrogen

    3Mg(s) + N2(g) -> Mg3N2(s)

  3. With water

    Mg(s) + 2H2O(l) -> Mg(OH)2(s) + H2(g)

  4. With CO2

    2Mg(s) + CO2(g) -> 2MgO(s) + C(s)

Magnesium metal is highly flammable and it reacts violently with water producing hydrogen gas, which further intensifies the fire. Magnesium is such a strong reducing agent that it reacts with carbon dioxide forming carbon and magnesium oxide. Thus, Magnesium fires cannot be extinguished with water or carbon dioxide.

Magnesium does not react with sand, as it cannot reduce silicon dioxide to silicon. Thus, sand can be used to extinguish magnesium fire. Magnesium fire can also be extinguished by using class D fire extinguishing agents such as NaCl powder or copper based dry powder.

    Hi, can anyone please help me with this? i have no clue how to define if a reaction is Oxidation reduction or not. Thanks a lot OXIDATION-REDUCTION Introduction Chemists refer to reactions which involve a transfer of electrons from one reactant to another as oxidation reduction reactions of just "redox" reactions. Oxidation is defined as a loss of electron and reduction as a gain of electron by a substance during a chemical reaction. The loss of electrons by one substance...

The Grignard reagent will then react with methyl benzoate to form triphenylmethanol. Introduction Grignard reagents, such as organomagnesium halides, were discovered in 1910 by French chemist Victor Grignard. The Grignard reaction is one of the most general methods for carbon- carbon bond formation in all of organic chemistry....

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
