Metallic Magnesium (molecular weight, 24.3) is extremely reactive, and will react with both oxygen and with water. I have balanced the below reaction to take into account how much magnesium will react by each of the two reactions:

3 Mg + 2 H2O + 1 O2 => 1 Mg(OH)2 + 2 MgO + 1 H2

a. What is the ratio between the water and oxygen in the feed which will result in a gas stream leaving the reactor which has a ratio between Hydrogen and Oxygen that is 2:1.

b. Find the mole fraction of the outlet gas which is Nitrogen.

c. The reaction starts with 100 grams of Magnesium in the reactor. If the feed gas flowrate is 10 moles per minute of the mixture, how long will the reaction take to use up all of the Magnesium?

    As a first step in the production of nitric acid, ammonia is oxidized to form nitric oxide: 4NH3 + 5O2→4NO + 6H2O A side reaction also occurs: 2NH3 +3/2O2→N2 +3H2O A reactor is designed to carry out this reaction isothermally at 600°C, with pure oxygen fed to the reactor in 50% excess. At these conditions, all components are in the gas phase. The conversion of ammonia is 80%, and the selectivity ratio of NO to N2 in the product stream...

    Terephthalic acid (TPA) is synthesized from -xylene (PX) in the process C8H10 +302 – C8H6O4 +2H2O shown below. A fresh feed of pure liquid PX combines with a recycle stream containing PX and a solution (S) of a catalyst (a cobalt salt) in a solvent (methanol). The combined stream, which contains S and PX in a 3:1 mass ratio, is fed to a reactor in which 90% of the PX is converted to TPA. A stream of air at 25...
