3. African Americans are at a higher risk of stroke than caucasians. This is because they have a higher risk of hypertension, diabetes and obesity.
The clinical presentation of stroke includes:
- blurred vision
- slurry speech
- weakness or paralysis of face, arms and legs
- confusion, disorientation and dizziness
- headache
- balance deficits
4. The two treatments to give within 60 min of stroke are
- thrombolysis i.e. breaking down of clot with agents like recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and intra arterial fibrinolysis
- thrombectomy i.e. surgical removal of clot
5. Teaching to stroke patient includes :
- encouraging patient to perform his ADLs by self
- teach patient skin care, feeding, positioning
- educate the family and caregivers about patient condition
- teach patient to assess his vitals like BP, pulse and temperature
