Electrolysis is a process in which a chemical change occurs due to passing of electrical current. During the electroplating of copper, the copper ions present in CuSO4 solution deposited on cathode, while O2 gas is liberated at anode.

The overall reaction will be:

2CuSO4 (aq) + 2H2O (l) = 2Cu2+ (aq) + O2(g) + 2H2SO4 (aq)

The half cell reactions occurs at cathode and anode are:

At cathode:

Cu2+ (aq) + 2e = Cu(s)

At anode:

4OH- (aq) = 2H2O(l) + O2 (g)
