Research shows that after-school jobs are highly correlated with decreases in grade point averages. Those who work 1 to 10 hours get a 3.0 GPA and those who work 21 hours or more have a 2.7 GPA. Higher GPA are, however, highly correlated with higher lifetime earnings. Assume that a person earns $8,000 per year for working part-time in college, and that the return to 0.1 increase in GPA gives one a 10 percent increase in one's lifetime earnings with a present value of $80,000. a) What would be the argument for working rather than studying harder? b) Is this assumption that there is a trade-off between working and grades reasonable? The production possibility curve shows all the possible sets of maximum production of two goods when inputs are limited and allocated between them. As per the principal of increasing marginal opportunity cost, when production of a good increases then the opportunity cost also increases with every additional unit produced.Here, it is given that when students work part-time while studying then their GPA value i.e. quality of study decreases which decreases their life time earnings. Now, if the increase in GPA for increasing the time of work after school is not sufficiently good then students should work more after school and care less about their GPA. Therefore, it can be said that work will be preferred over GPAki. The assumption here that there is trade-off between work and study is reasonable because it is true that if one has to work after studies, then he will not be able to give full time studies and hence his marks or scores will get negatively affected.
