A 45-year-old inmate is a former alcoholic and drug addict who is serving a life sentence for double homicide and is suffering from hepatitis C and symptoms of end-stage liver disease. The prison physician was asked by the prison staff to evaluate the inmate's eligibility for a liver transplant. Before giving his approval, the physician needs to evaluate the likelihood that the inmate will comply with follow-up treatment and how likely it is that he will remain drug and alcohol free for the rest of his life. Based on his conviction, should the inmate be approved for a transplant over an individual not incarcerated? What other factors must the physician and United Network for Organ Sharing consider before approving an organ for transplantation?

Answer #1

Yes the patient will be approved for liver transplant as his age is 45 years only. And it is fundamental right of invidual for treatment. By overviewing the history of pt, as he is alcohol addicted it is little bit difficult for his care but in his case liver transplant is only the treatment. Firstly pt should put on diaddiction plan for alcohol and porns and corns are explained to the patient. Patient will be able to tolerate major surgery.long term need for close medical follow up and life long anti rejection therapy is needed. Lots of tests are required before and after surgery. Family support is necessary for early recovery.
