Answer #1

Human Immuno deficiency virus & Drug abuse

Prevention, early detection and ongoing treatment remain important aspects of care for people with HIV and AIDS.

AIDS is a chronic, potentially life threatening condition caused by human immune deficiency virus.

Cause of HIV:

  • Sexual contact with infected persons
  • Sharing of needles (Intravenous drug abuse)
  • Blood transfusion
  • From pregnant mother to child

HIV & DRUG ABUSE:

People who engage in drug use associated with high risk behaviors like illegal sexual contact put themselves at risk for contracting or transmitting HIV. HIV spread through blood or body fluids.

  • People acquire or transmit when they inject drugs and share needles or other drug equipment with others
  • Drugs give a pleasant feeling which masks the thinking capacity and can cause people to exhibit risky decisions, including having unprotected sex and share used intravenous needles.
  • Drug abuse has been linked with HIV since the beginning of the epidemic. Exposure to contaminated blood is the most efficient way through which HIV is transmitted. Drug abuse is also known to increase the risk of one engaging in high risk sex with infected partners.

Human immuno deficiency virus infects the CD4 T cells (immune cells) in the body and destroys them .So the body lack immune cells which fight against diseases. The infected person is at risk of acquiring opportunistic infections which don’t affect healthy individuals.

Consequences of drug abuse in relation to HIV:

  • Drug abuse and addiction leads to progression of disease
  • Drug abuse is use of either prescribed or over- the- counter medications illegally.
  • Drugs affect the central nervous system
  • Drug abusers have inability in taking healthy decisions.
  • Drug abusers have impaired judgment. They use contaminated needles and drug injection supplies and also have multiple sex partners as they will not be aware of the current situation once they consume drugs. Drugs give an elated mood which masks the positive behavior in the individual.

Conclusion:

Drug abuse not only leads to infection with HIV but also leads to overdose, skin diseases, and other viral infections. Drug abuse contributes to HIV at higher rates. 1 in 3 drug abusers are at risk of acquiring HIV. Thus health education and counseling from school age about consequences of drug abuse may prevent HIV infection at meagre rates.
