River blindness
a.Historical and emerging perspective of the emerging zoonotic disease
This infectious disease is found in Sub Saharan Africa, Yemen and in isolated areas of Central and South America.The flies are found near the river and so the name of the disease.It is reported as a neglected tropical diseases by WHO.It was first reported by physician Rodolfo Rodens when the vision were lost.
b.Causative organism
Onchocerca volvulus is the causative organism.It is a female black fly called Simuliun damnosum . It is a parasite.
The common symptoms are itching,bumps under skin and blindness.
c.Route of transmission
The infection is transmitted by the bite of black fly belonging to Simuliun type.When not bites the parasitic worm enters the skin.Many bites are required to cause the infection
d.Prevention
As there are no vaccine available prevention is the best way to stay away from this infection
