Subscribe K2 - Chapter Two Kendall Sociological Research Methods: This chapter is organized in a way that should be helpful for helping you to learn how sociology uses science to find the answers to society. The basic concepts for the research process – steps in research, independent and dependent variables, hypothesis, causal relationship, correlation relationship, and methods are common to research, not just sociological research. The difference for sociology is what we use for our studies. We use social: behaviors, attitudes, values, to find patterns in society. Auguste Comte felt sociology should be the top of the research pyramid because our unit for study is a social unit – people! Not as easy to quantify and oxygen and hydrogen. One of the studies in the chapter uses a questionnaire about suicide is illustrated and Durkheim’s classical study on suicide is also presented. You may remember Emile Durkheim from the first chapter. In this discussion, pick a topic to discuss - suicide, hope, self-esteem, anomie, music, laughter, etc. – your choice. Finding an article in the media or thinking about a social event might help. Consider methods and hypothesis, how would you like to study what you are interested in and why.

In the research process sociology plays a important role to find our answers within the society. Research is an another form of discovering new ideas and tools on one topic, which is helpful for self or for others. To choose any one of the topics let us discuss about "HOPE".

Discussing or doing research on this topic (HOPE) might generate new things to come out on our way. Human beings posses a great variety of emotions which helps in each and every stages of life. All of us are living on the word HOPE which leads our lives forward Many researches did research on human mentality, alterations in mood, living practices and a lot. Among them hope is a best way to perform research for anyone. Total world is moving forward on the word HOPE. Generally we keep hopes on things or persons where we need something or we are expecting from that particular thing or person.

FOR EXAMPLE: A man admitted in the hospital is dying within a short period, keeps hope that some miracle will happen and he can live some more days. The hope he is keeping makes him to live for some more days than expected. Of course, he will die within a short period but he is hoping to live for their children and family members, a little hope is present on god, doctors who can save him from death.

All of us will keep hopes on every one which includes :- Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, Husband, Wife, Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Relatives, Closed ones. At some circumstances we will keep hope on miracles to happen.

Hope is important to maintain a healthy life which is very needful in today generation. Our priorities are going to change according to the situations." INVITE POSITIVITY AND THROW NEGATIVITY AWAY" formula makes a person in leading a healthy and happier life. Sometimes hope will depend on the persons who are present in our surroundings, which can be described as Dependent variables. Hope depends on time , place, date are described as Independent variables.If we are hoping the best to come and opposite comes in your way can alter hope patterns.

Most of us keep hope and faith on god that our problems will wipe off some day and good things are on the way, which is one of the research study how priorities will change according to situations.

ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLE FOR HOPE IS: The student is keeping hope on passing in the exam results, but all of a sudden he is failing in he exam it will differ the mental status of the student. In opposite explanation the student know he will fail in the exam but having a small hope that he will pass in the exam, suddenly the results came in a passed manner then the study of emotions is different. Finally if we will think positive good will happen and if we are thinking about negative side we lose hope on better things.
