Spectroscopy question between Butan-1-ol and Butanal

A) IR spectra of Butanol

Characteristic OH stretching frequency – 3200 cm-1

IR spectra of Butanal

Characteristic aldehyde C-H stretching frequency – 2900 cm-1

Characteristic aldehyde C-O stretching frequency – 1720 cm-1

B) Mass spectrometry difference

Butan-1-ol shows M+ peak at 74

And dehydrated mass peak (M-18) at 56

Butanal shows M+ at 72 and (M-CHO) peak at 43

c) Butan-1-ol will show following five peaks in 1H NMR spectrum with OH, CH2, CH2, CH2, CH2, CH3 peaks

Butanal will show four peaks in 1H NMR spectrum as CH (aldehyde), CH2, CH2, CH3

Therefore given NMR spectra is of Butan-1-ol having OH peak at 4.7 ppm

d) 13C NMR of both the compound will show peaks in the spectrum. Basic difference between these two is Butanal consist of aldehyde group which comes around 200 ppm in 13C NMR spectrum.

Therefore the given NMR spectrum is of Butanal
