  • morphine is primarily used for the treatment of pain. it is given injection, smoking, insuflation, ingestion
  • overdose is not common
  • morphine binds primarily at the Mu opiate receptors at the therapeutic dose.
  • mild to moderate toxicity : drowsiness, euphoria, constipation, nausea, vomiting, pinpoint pupil,mild bradycardia and hypotension may be.
  • severe toxicity: respiratory depression leading to apnea, hypoxia, coma,bradycardia ,acute lung injury,seizures may be presence of hypoxia.
  • epidural overdose: large overdose cuase respiratory and CNS depression .
  • morphine may cause serious life threatening breathing problems.
