After two votes in the Democratic Party-controlled House of Representatives, Mr Trump became only the third president in US history to be impeached. President Trump is accused of manipulating Ukraine to dig up derogatory details about Joe Biden and his son Hunter, one of his leading Democratic rivals for the presidency in 2020. When Joe Biden was U.S. vice president, Hunter worked for a Ukrainian corporation. The president is accused of haggling two issues as bargaining chips for Ukraine-withdrawing $400 m in already-allocated military assistance to Ukraine from Congress, and organizing a White House briefing with the president in Ukraine.

This, Democrats argue, amounts to an misuse of presidential authority, allowing use of the office for personal political benefit and detrimental to national security. Ukraine used the money in its continuing fight with Russia. Mr Trump is also charged with obstructing Congress by failing to comply with the congressional investigation. In a series of congressional hearings, a succession of US officials testified that the president's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, led a White House shadow foreign policy. The goal was to get Ukraine to open an inquiry into the Bidens and publicly announce as much.

The Constitution of the United States specifies that a president "shall be suspended from office on indictment for, and prosecution of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdeeds." It's important to remember that this is a democratic phase, not a criminal one. The first stage is now completed-two impeachment articles (charges) were brought to the House of Representatives and approved along party lines in a vote. Yet here, the impeachment of a president needs a two-thirds majority-and this threshold has never been met in US history. The line of succession for the US presidency, as set out in the 1947 Presidential Succession Act, would mean that Vice-President Mike Pence would step into the Oval Office.
