One of the major requirements for a successful health care reform is health information exchange-sharing of electronic health records information between clinicians and patients. New meaningful use requirements will promote HIE with tools such as patient portals and secure messaging. Consumers are interested in technology as a means to improve access to medical care, improve communication with physicians and others as well as streamline the general health process. Chronic diseases are on the rise and the population is ageing, thereby increasing the need for more information and more tools.
