A4- Sculpture and architecture have many similarities, they are both forms within space and built from materials that best suit their function. Some sculptures may include architectural spaces and some architecture includes sculptures. This assignment is intended to explore artistic differences between sculpture and architecture in order to enhance your appreciation and understanding of the media:

The word Architecture and sculpture classifies the definition of Art. However, the original classical definition is derived from the Latin word "ars" which means skill or craft or art. This is the starting point of this below mentioned Sculpture and architectural similarities and comparisons. The broad approach leads to art being defined as, the product of a body of knowledge, most often using a set of skills. Thus the painters and sculptors were viewed merely as highly skilled artisans.

As you know, that Art is a visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination. The visual arts exist within a range from purely aesthetic purposes at one end to purely utilitarian purposes at the other. Such a polarity of purpose is reflected in the commonly used terms artist and artisan,

There is no universally accepted definition of art. However, it is commonly used to describe something of beauty, or a skill which produces an aesthetic result, there is no clear definition in principle between a unique piece of handmade sculpture, and a mass produced but visually attractive item. But it says that art requires thought some kind of creative impulse.

Art is an expression or application that is applied by human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. There are three forms of visual art, Painting is art to look at, sculpture is art you can walk around, and architecture is art you can walk through. In the contemporary world, artists and architects are no longer limited to the traditional materials or ways of expression. There are non functional or virtual buildings, and there are also unconventional art pieces such as three dimensional paintings or sound sculptures.

Architecture is not a sculpture but it is defined as more than a visual form. However, contemporary buildings and ultra modern architectural designs might be blurring the limits between these two art forms. Unlike sculpture, architecture is a practical art, which means that it operates under a different group of limitations than sculpture and painting.

Architecture explores its relation to visual art. Architecture is the art and science of designing structures and spaces for human use. Architectural design is an art form created through spatial design and aesthetics. As related to sculpture, architecture creates three dimensional objects that occupy a given space and create a visual relationship within the area specified.

Almost all architecture critics have agreed that the interior space is the defining factor in architecture. Buildings need to facilitate the activities while ensuring people’s comfort and safety, resisting and adapting to different weather conditions and preserving the natural and built environment.

When an artist expresses and interprets visual art, this provides an avenue for self expression. As a primary source, artists express attitudes, feelings, and sentiments about environments through personal experiences, social interaction, and relationships. This describes many roles of art that takes on, but this description is often imbued with the artist’s subjective interpretation, which operates as a vehicle for human expression as a kind of collective visual metaphor that helps to define the work.

In this profession of designing architects are being accused of trying to impose some overall vision that no one seems to understand in an attempt to stand out from the crowd. Great engineering complexity and additional finances are required to make these unique and innovative designs work. This also leads to the dispute for some people to argue that these kinds of buildings should be categorized as sculptures instead of architecture.

But it is not possible to find values that allow us to distinguish between what is architecture, and what is more like a sculpture of huge dimensions. Architecture and sculpture are both three dimensional arts, but sculpture has many characteristics that a piece of architecture does not share.

If you look at the structure traditionally, then the sculpture stands alone as a piece of art, it is not inhabited by human beings and no activity is intended to take place inside it. There are no human safety requirements for sculpture, which is typically not placed side by side with existing sculptures. Sculptures typically do not use energy and the resources as the efficiency of a sculpture is not determined by its form.

In architecture, the emphasis is placed on the importance of both exterior and interior design, creating a remarkable experience for the user or visitor. Architecture has to adapt to the natural and built environment.

To conclude the above, the world of art is a highly complex entity, not only in terms of its multiplicity of forms and types, but also in terms of its historical and cultural roots. Therefore a simple definition, or even a broad consensus as to what can be labeled as art, is likely to prove highly elusive.
