Ans) 4) Homeostasis:

- The tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.

5) Allostasis:

- The process of achieving stability, or homeostasis, through physiological or behavioral change. This can be carried out by means of alteration in HPA axis hormones, the autonomic nervous system, cytokines, or a number of other systems, and is generally adaptive in the short term.

6) Allostatic load:

- "the wear and tear on the body" which accumulates as an individual is exposed to repeated or chronic stress. The term was coned by McEwen and Stellar in 1993.

7) Smpathetic nervous system (SNS): response:

- One of the three parts of the autonomic nervous system, along with the enteric and parasympathetic systems. Its general action is to mobilize the body's nervous system fight-or-flight response; it is also constantly active at a basal level to maintain homeostasis.
