Retained earnings = Beginning balance + Net Income for the year – Dividends paid

Year 1:

Retained earnings = 0 + 900 – 440

                              = 460

Year 2:

Retained earnings = 460 + 1,400 – 440

                              = 1,420

Year 3:

Retained earnings = 1,420 + 1,500 – 700

                              = 2,220

Year 4:

Retained earnings = 2,220 + 2,600 – 700

                              = 4,120

Year 5:

Retained earnings = 4,120 + 3,800 – 700

                              = 7,220
