Please help, i am desperate, i cant figure it out.
Free cash Flow = Cash from operating income (Net Income + non cash expenses +/- change in working capital)- Capital expenditure during the year.
Non cash expenses include = Depreciation, Impairment losses/gains, stock based compensation, amortisation, unrealised exchange gain/losses and gain/loss on investments.
Change in working capital would be the changes in Accounts receivables, accounts payables, inventories or any other current asset except cash, from previous year.
Capex Expenses would mean expenses incurred during the year on PPE(Property, plant and equipment), this can also be calculated by the following formula = Current year PPE - Previous Year PPE + Depreciation & Amortization.
Thus, in this case -
1. Amazon's Free cash flow would be :
Particulars | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 |
Net cash from operating activities | 6842 | 11920 | 16443 |
Less: Purchase of PP&E | (4893) | (4589) | (6737) |
Free cash Flow | 1949 | 7331 | 9706 |
2. Walmart's free cash flow:
Particulars | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 |
Net cash from operating activities | 31530 | 27389 | 28564 |
Less: Purchase of PP&E | (10619) | (11477) | (12174) |
Free cash Flow | 20911 | 15912 | 16390 |
Hope this helps.
